ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia softball team dropped a 6-1 decision to the No. 6/5 Tennessee Lady Vols in the series finale on Sunday, April 7 at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs are now 27-13 on the season and 6-6 in Southeastern Conference play. Tennessee is now 36-4 overall and 9-3 in league action.
Chelsea Wilkinson got the start for Georgia and went three innings, giving up five runs on three hits and three walks to drop to 3-2 on the year. She also struck out two batters. Geri Ann Glasco came in as relief in the top of the fourth and threw the next two innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk. Morgan Montemayor did her job to keep the Bulldogs in the game throwing two scoreless innings and striking out three of the seven batters she faced. Tennessee starter Ellen Renfroe went 6.1 innings in the circle to get win and move to 11-1 on the season. Renfroe gave up one run on four hits and one walk and struck out six. Ivy Renfroe threw the final inning for the Lady Vols and did not give up a hit and struck out one. After a scoreless first inning, Tennessee took a 3-0 lead after Raven Chavanne took the first pitch she saw over the right field wall for a three-run home run that scored Hannah Akamine and Lexi Overstreet, who each reached on a single. Anna Swafford got a run back for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the third with a two-out solo shot over the trees in dead center that made it a 3-1 game. Georgia called Glasco into the circle in the top of the fourth to relieve Wilkinson. The Lady Vols then added two runs in the after a pair of bunt singles put runners on for Madison Shipman, who drove a pitch into the gap in shallow left center for a two-run single. The Lady Vols looked to extend its lead, but a leaping grab by Sito at second ended the inning. Montemayor came in to pitch for the Bulldogs in the sixth with two runners on after Glasco yielded a walk and a single. After a fielder's choice put runners at the corners, Melissa Brown hit a RBI-single to shallow right that scored the runner at third and put Tennessee up 6-1. Montemayor settled in to retire the final two batters with a strikeout and a groundout to second. Georgia looked to cut the Tennessee lead in the bottom of the sixth when Niaja Griffin and Paige Wilson reached on a single and walk and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Neither was able to score as the final out was recorded with a diving catch in right field. Down to Georgia's final three outs, Kaylee Puailoa led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. With one away, pinch runner Tiesha Reed was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice by Christine Olney for the second out of the inning. The final batter went down on strikes to end the game and seal Tennessee's 6-1 win. Georgia concludes its five-game home stand when it welcomes Western Carolina for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 10 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The Bulldogs then travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks next weekend, April 12-14. |
